Columbus Ohio City Information

Founded in 1812, Columbus is the capital and the largest city in the state of Ohio. The city has a diverse economy based on education, insurance, healthcare, retail, and technology. In 2006 Columbus was ranked as the 15th largest city in the United States with 733,203 inhabitants. Columbus developed the nickname "The Arch City" because of the dozens of metal (formerly wooden) arches that spanned High Street at the turn of the twentieth century.

Columbus also has wide variety of distinctive neighborhoods within the the downtown area. Located to the south, German Village is known for its 19th century brick cottages, some of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. The Short North, situated just north of downtown, is full of art galleries, pubs, restaurants and specialty shops. The Ohio State university area is populated by a large number of students during the school year and features many old homes which have been converted to apartments for student use. The stretch of High Street that runs through the campus area caters to the student body with its high percentage of bars, eateries and music stores.

The Columbus Ohio area has several airports, but the primary one is Port Columbus International Airport on the east side of the city. Port Columbus provides service to some foreign and a signifcant number of domestic destinations, including all the major hubs. Port Columbus is itself a hub for discount carrier Skybus Airlines.

With more than 100,000 college students in the Columbus Area, there are a large number of people employed within higher education institutions. Large organizations include The Ohio State University, Franklin University and Columbus State Community College, as well as numerous other smaller colleges and schools. Cardinal Health has its headquarters in the Columbus suburb of Dublin and there are a number of insurance companies in the city, including: Motorists Insurance, Grange Insurance, Safe Auto Insurance, and State Auto Insurance.
